We are going to Tioman Island via Mersing. It took us about 5 and half hours to reach Mersing and another 2 hours to reach the island by boat. Tioman is the biggest and most impressive island at the east coast of Malaysia. Our main objectives are snorkeling in crystal clear water, do some jungle trekking and laze on the beach.

The Ferry Ride
It will cost RM70.00 per person for a return trip. The ferry is quite big and spacious. We felt dizzy as soon as the boat starts moving. I guess they are experiencing some engine problem as the boat unable to pick up speed for the first 30 minutes. Era and Ija went up to the upper section of the boat to have a better view. After an hour or so, both of them succumb to seasickness. I on the other hand start to feel dizzy due to being force to listen to the `dangdut’ played on the onboard TV. After the grueling hour we reach Tioman and the ferry will make a few other stop before we reach our destination, which is Kampung Salang.

Kampung Salang
The kampung is strewn with chalets and hostel. This is the most popular tourist destination in Tioman. The place is clean, find food is easy and it is a haven for divers. We can see, there are a lot of Mat Salleh and some local Chinese coming here for vacation.

Salang Indah Resort
Our pick for accommodation is Salang Indah Resort. We got lucky, as we have managed to get a room, which was built on the seashore, which has a beautiful view. The room were equipped with air-condition unit, a fan, hot water, a small fridge and two beds. The resort has a restaurant and a mini market. I decided to spend the remainder of the day lazing on the beach and do some window-shopping at the souvenir shop.

Pulau Tulai

Teluk Genting
Next morning, we took a boat to Tulai Island situated near to Tioman. We stop briefly at Genting Bay for snorkeling snorkeling activity. They’re a lot of coral and fish to see. It is thrilling to be able to feed the fish with our hand.

Pantai Pasir Panjang
After snorkeling, we have a rest at the beach. We are given a pre pack lunch consisting of rice, kacang panjang and some chicken cook in soya sauce.

Batu Malang
In English it means Unlucky Rock. From afar the rock looks much like a sail. The place is great for snorkeling and diving. We were unable to see the coral clearly as the water is quite deep but we did able to see various types of fish.

Monkey Bay
After going back to the main island, we proceed to trek to Monkey Bay. We needs to go through a dense hilly jungle and took us almost 40 minutes to reach the secluded beach. It is easy to find your way, as we need only to follow the electric cable to reach the beach. Arriving at the beach, there are no Mat Salleh to greet us but a monkey did.

Conclude
Tioman is indeed the best island we visited so far. Clean and beautiful. Great for budget traveller.

Janda Baik

Janda Baik (literally means good widow) is a village situated near the more popular Genting Highlands and about one hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. The place is cool and quiet. A lot of tourist mostly local came here for their vacation. Taking advantage of these, the kampung people starts to operates chalets that is mushrooming everywhere. We reach Janda Baik in the evening at about 6.00pm. Our search for accomodation begins. Our first few stop found it to be full. The sky is getting dark and we need to find a place for the night fast. The river water level seems to be on the rise as it is raining for quite sometime.At the end about 7.00pm we managed to find a secluded site called Teratak Pak Lah.

Teratak Pak Lah

No, the place does not belong to Pak Lah our Prime Minister. The owner is a pensioner; he bought the land quite some time ago and build two small hut with a public toilet and electricity. So it’s a no frill accommodation for RM40 per night. So we choose a hut that is situated in front of a stream. Before we can settle down, Pak Lah has requested my help to find the solution for his problematic power supply to the hut. I manage to find the problem with the electrical plug and gave him a temporary solution and promised him to fix it in the morning. After shower, Era and Ija has cooked our favorite dishes that are Gulai Tempoyak and Petai Goreng.

Fishing

In the morning, after breakfast, I have taken out my fishing rods to fish. Digging in the ground near the banana tree, I have managed to find a few earthworms. In the midst of finding the worm, I saw a man who looks like a technician (his holding a cable with a bulb) going to Pak Lah house, most probably to sort out yesterday problem. Alas my service is not needed, so I went on with the fishing. At first when I started out, I couldn’t catch any, as my hook is to big compare with the fish in the river. After changing the hook, we finally able to land a dozen small fish called ikan tengas. It is hard to fish with Ija and Era as I have to put on the bait for them. I am sure that they can't bear the very sight of earthworm’s dangling body being punch through the hook. Anyway, they did manage to catch a few fish.

BBQ

For lunch we are having a barbeque. The menu fishs, petai, sardines, sweet potatoes and anything left of our ration. While enjoying the scenery, I did find time to chat with Pak Lah and did get more information about the place. Pak Lah even gave me some Bunga Kantan and Serai Wangi as a parting gift.

Conclude

It is a nice place for a picnic and has a very relaxing environment. You can fish here too.

Taman Negara

This time round we hava decided to visit the oldest rainforest in the world that is in Taman Negara, Pahang here in Malaysia. There are various things to do, among others are camping, caving and canopy walking.

Perhilitan HQ
It takes us 4 hrs to reach Kuala Tahan from KL by car (it is much cheaper to do so comparing if your’re to take a boat from Kuala Tembeling which will cost you around RM70 per person). At Kuala Tahan we need to cross the Tembeling river with a river taxi for a fee of RM1. The HQ is situated in the vicinity of a 5 star resort called Mutiara Resort. There we have to pay for the entry permit, camera permit, camping permit for a nominal fee.

Boat Ride to Kuala Trenggan

It is quite expensive to charter a long boat that can cater for six person inclusive the driver for RM180 for a return trip to Kuala Trenggan which is one hour away. But as we are not going to trek all the way (about 4 hrs) so we opt for the boat. The journey is fun, I get to see a monkey dangling down a tree and orang asli village along the way. We did go through some rapid and it is interesting to see the boat man navigate through the rapid and they simply remind me of mini bus driver in the 80’s. However, it is great that we reach Kuala Trenggan safe and sound albeit a little bit wet.

Kuala Trenggan

Not much to see here accept for a few unkept and abandon chalet, It’s a pity as the surrounding area is quite serene and I am sure the Mat Salleh backpacker would love this place.

The Trek

So the nearest place to visit is Bumbun Kumbang 2km away. The trek is quite easy and really wet. Mind you there are a lot of leeches waiting to feast on our blood and we need to be constantly on the lookout for them. Era is really fond of those `pacat’ as she would jump around histerically if one of them gets to bite her. After an hour or so we reach Bumbun Kumbang.

Bumbun Kumbang

What exactly is Bumbun Kumbang? It’s a watch tower, some thing like a KL tower but at a smaller scale. It is for people observe animal in the night feeding or licking salt is more like it provided by the government. In Kelantan, they call such a place as `Lepan Jenut’ which means an open field where they feed wild animals. Era was born in a place where they feed wild animals and she didn’t even know it (laugh). I manage to know this from one of the park ranger. No wild animals sighting today but you can see Era having a ball having her salt (isotonic drink).

Camping

I can’t believe it, after trekking for two and a half hours, Era and Ija are exhausted (me too?). Usually their stamina can last longer then me but not today. So, we decided to camp for the night beside a small river. Nice view and have access to the river. After putting up our camp, we have a dip in the river. The water is cool and clean and there’s a lot of fish swimming around. So it’s going to be us only in the dense jungle, this is what As called as `seram’ or scary activity. The menu for the night is cooked rice, fried egg (few eggs found smashed, so I have a backpack strewn with egg yolk) and canned sardines. We started a campfire and sleep early. Next morning, after breakfast and packing, my backpack decided to desert me by falling into the river. Now not only it is strewn with egg yolk but full of river water too!(sigh).

Lubok Simpon

We just need to trek a little bit further from the resort to a small riverbank called Lubok Simpon. The water is awfully murky that reminds you of the mamak’s extra thick teh tarik. I don’t have a heart to take a dip here. After getting some advise from the park ranger, we have decided not to camp here for tonight. There is a good chance that we will bump into some wild hogs as the area are full of the hogs digging marks. So we don’t want to take the risk and trek back to the resort camping site.

Yellow House

We have decided against camping in the resort vicinity, as it is too crowded. It is our lucky day, during our search for a camping site; we met Abang Halim a chalet operator who is also an ardent sportsman of which long distance bicycle riding is his forte. He gave us a decent room for RM80 per night and lots of bananas. The place remain true to its name is all yellow. It have 3 rooms only of which one of it being converted to a hostel. Lady luck must be smiling at us again as its rains heavily that night. I can’t imagine the pain of pitching tents in the middle of the rain and sleeps inside it that night. As we are in a lowland, the temperature is quite hot and you’ll end up having a sauna inside the tent during the downpour whereas if we were camping in the jungle the situation would be different as much of the rain water will not be able to reach us as the thick jungle canopy will act as an giant umbrella and I can say it is so much cooler down there. By the visitors book records, I can say all of the tenant are Mat Salleh from the European countries, I guess we were the only malai chai and malai moi who are staying there. Ija and Era get to use Halim’s kitchen to cook our favorite dishes that is the Gulai Tempoyak Ikan Patin (a sour durian dishes plus a type of local cat fish). Oh man, this is the high for this trip.

Canopy Walk

The next day, taking advice from Halim, were headed to the Canopy Walk entrance early in the morning. He has given the right advice, as there is a busload of school kid arrives earlier then us. Fortunately, the park ranger has given us the go ahead to start first as there are only three of us. The walk is said to be the longest in the world about 400 meters in length and up to 25 meters in height. I felt really uncomfortable (other words for scared like hell) going up the stairs, especially when there is a mad Mat Salleh trampling in front of me. Ija loves to tease me for this. Anyway, the scene is great; it’s like your being a monkey on top of a tree looking down the puny human. Maybe. I would do this again if I get paid (grin). Remind you, do bring those colorful shorts to gain instant public attention (chuckle) and don’t bring a long the Mat Salleh if you can, trust me you will live longer.

Gua Telinga

Well we have to pay RM80 for the boat ride return trip to Gua Telinga. The jetty is about half an hour from the main resort and we need to do a short trekking pass an orang asli village. It is quite weird to see at this time of information boom, there are still people living in a hut. I’m not talking about people deep in the jungle, but people who have easy access to town. Anyway, this Batik tribe `rules’ around here. `Jangan ambil gambar’ (take no photo) is the first word that I can understand uttered by one of them. Obviously, we need to pay in order to take photo in their vicinity. I guess that is the way they earned some extra income. We reach the entrance of Gua Telinga (which literally means Ear Cave) after a short walk. True to its name the cave is narrow, winded and smelly too. This is the home for bats, lots of them and mind you the smell of their dropping is worst then durian (laugh). If you are a plus size person, do stay away cause you might not be able to squeeze your way out and do bring along some soup to wash your hand afterwards.

Conclude
That’s about it, our three days and two nights at Taman Negara. The total cost is about RM250 per person. That is quite cheap when compared to the value of our adventure and the fun we had. Good place to camp, jungle trekking and lots of things to see.

Gunung Berlumut

Well well well it's our first mountain climbing of the year. Actual fact we were really planning on climbing the Gunung Ledang and that we intend to meet the Putri Gunung Ledang herself but as faith has it, we were diverted to Gunung Berlumut instead (sorry lah Tuan Putri, we'll have to meet next time) So no choice lah, we will need to check out our self on how much is the exact lumut there is at the summit of this glamourous gunung in Kluang Johore. Needless to say that we are lucky enough to be allowed to camp on the summit as other teams have not been allowed to do so. I guess the Park Rangers must have been charmed by our three dara pingitan. Anyway, we took almost four hours to climb to the summit and camp somewhere near the waterhole. It is quite a `suspense' night to be camping on top of a mountain only by ourselves. It is a windy and cold night. Luckly our equipment is in excellent condition and the ration is enough to satisfy the four of us.

Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu, Gunung Kinabalu and Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park

Our primary target for this trip is to conquer the peak of Gunung Kinabalu. Known to be the highest mountain in South East Asia and also the Kinabalu Park which is listed in the Unesco Heritage Site.

Kinabalu Park

After so much hassle on the air (one of us suddenly decided to go nuts), I have managed to calms things down at the airport and continue to make our move to Kundasang. We have rented a Proton Saga for the whole trip. It’s a long way trip from Kota Kinabalu and we arrived a few hours later at the Kinabalu Park Headquarters. After confirming our bookings and paid for the guide and permit, we’re off to our cabin. The climate is cold at 4 degrees Celsius and the room has no heater, at least there is hot water. As a malai chai, I really not use to this kind of weather. The resort is so beautiful and the surrounding is serene and green. We went to bed early that night as to prepare for tomorrow’s journey.

Trekking

Woke up early that morning, As and Era complains that they cannot bath in such cold weather, me neither. After breakfast, we headed to the Park HQ and our handsome guide (the girls think so!) named Roger Sipat greeted us. Well he is a Kadazan Dusun and his father also works there before him. I suggested to the girls that Roger has a resemblance of Yem (laugh), but the girls say that I am just jealous. Era has annoyed me by refusing to bring her bigger backpack to assist me on the trip after agreeing previously. Again, I gave in; men are supposed to assist the woman don’t they? We were brought to the gate buy a shuttle van and starts trekking to Laban Rata. I can safely say that the trek is clear and easy compare to the rainforest in the peninsular. We can see there are lots of Mat Salleh coming here and from what I heard they loves the place. On the way up, the scenery is out of this world and I can’t wait to reach the peak.

Laban Rata

After four and a half hours walking, we reach Laban Rata. It was drizzling then and the coldness is unimaginable. The Mat Salleh and the Korean are use to this though and just gave me a cheeky smile. When we reach our hostel that is the Gunting Lagadan Hut, the strong winds starts to blow. We took off our wet cloth and wear a few layers of t-shirt to avoid the cold. Again, there is no heater here and I started to wonder. I cannot sleep the whole evening and we were supposed to trek up at 2.30am. I can feel that we are ill equipped to weather this storm. The cold wind is getting stronger by the minute and carries some water with it.

The Gunung Kinabalu Peak

Our guide Roger, has strongly advice us to cancel the trip due to the bad weather, but as always, hard headed, I refuse and ignore his plead. I've said to him that we love the challenge and wanted to have it a go, guess what happen? Bad call. Well, what is install for us is one of the most challenging experiences in our life. For the first time in any trip that I felt our safety had been jeopardize. With the cold wind continuously hitting us together with the cold rain, I felt exhausted and drained. I'm not able to take care of myself let alone the other team member. The easy trek up became a nightmare trek, there is nothing we can see in the storm and our flimsy rain jacket cannot stop the wind from hitting our body. Era meanwhile has again turned into a zombie (laugh).

As we reached Sayat Sayat, half way point to the peak, As headlamp became unusable and most probably our camera don’t works either. In the storm, I can hear Roger getting angry and uttered the word "sendiri pandai naik, sendiri pandai turun". I have said to myself, no we can’t give, we have come a long way, the Mat Salleh and the Korean don’t give up, so why should we? Malaysia Boleh!!. I gave Ija and Era some words of encouragement as they seem to be completely drained. I told myself, we could do it. We trek slowly and as I managed to get to about 200 meters from the peak suddenly the storm hit really hard and my view of Ija and As totally gone. There is when I have decided to stop as the situation have been life threatening. I prayed Roger would be able to take care of Ija and As. With a tinge of sadness I asked Era to forget it and turn back.

On the way down, and when the weather cleared, I am happy to see Roger, Ija and As are safe. Miraculously, Ija and As managed to reach the peak. Ija and Era is quite happy when Roger took them down the mountain with words of encouragement borrowed from the Titanic film "kau pegang kuat-kuat ya, kalau kau jatuh, aku jatuh sama". Well, thats certaintly keeps the girls going. Thank God, by 9.30am we're back at Gunting Lagadan Hut. As we did not have dry cloth and the place has no heater, we continue to trek down and by 3.00pm we reached Kinabalu Park. Before we left, I thank Roger Sipat, our guide for taking good care of us.

Summer Lodge and Filipino Market

After that incredible experience, we continue our journey to Kota Kinabalu town and scrap our plan to go to Poring. I guess we are quite worn off after facing such extreme ordeal. We checked in at Summer Lodge. Most of the tenant here are Mat Salleh backpacker. Nice, clean and cheap place to be. After having a nice seafood dinner at Kg Air we headed to bed. In the morning, I had a shocked and disappointed when some of our item send for laundry found missing. Well, that’s life, after lodging a formal complaint we headed to the famous Filipino Market. The market is called by that name because most of the trader there are from Philippines. They trade a lot of things such as handicraft and jewellery. As and Ija is really interested with the swarosky crystal bracelets and spend quite a lot on them.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park

By 2.00pm we were off to Jeselton jetty and book a boat trip to Pulau Sapi. Roberto, the marine park guide, accompanies us. We are disappointed as the water is murky (cause of the weather, I presumed) and we have not been able to see a thing while snorkeling. Most of the coral have been destroyed. Roberto did guide us to go to deeper water and still we were unable to see anything. By 5.00pm we headed back to KK and went on to the airport.

Conclude
I can really say, despite everything we went through, this is still by far the best trip to date by the Cool Trekkers. I am proud of the girls and hope we will be able to beat this in our future trip.

Well, finally the cool-trekkers have something to do after a long hiatus. This time we're going to climb the Gunung Bunga Buah or known as Gunung Dua Bukit to our fellow member Dasran. Anyway, it is quite a risk to take to large size trekkers on such a `dangerous' trip. Thank god we have Erra Coklat with us, if they gets hungry they always can have Erra as snack hahaha.. Incredibly, Ah Kam now known as Zombie Bukit and Dasran the burung murai man has managed to reach the peak in 4 hours. Salute to the first timer. Anyway on the way back they have failed miserabaly, it took us almost 6 hours to complete. Well this is the first time the cool-trekkers needs to rely on handphone light to trek down a mountain. Anyway my mata ayam is quite useless during night time. Maklumlah mata ayam. But we manage to use Erra's mata kelawar and safely reach down by 7.45pm. There's a lesson to be learned here, firstly remember to take with u a usable torch light and also some cotton instead of a disposable underwear. Bongok Erra said.

Ad with her Pendaki Bebas (bebas dari bini kot) has conquer the peak of Gunung Lebah (1522 meter). For our info, they did not find any lebah up there (kumbang jantan banyak arrr...). Without any clear trail (hutan dara la katakan), using the parang, compass and topo map they have manage to find their way to the top. Horeyyyy...to Ad our top trekker.

Today, Erra and the Orang(s) Gunung Kuala Lumpur has temporarily stop climbing the mountain. They have decided to check out the river and waterfalls instead. They went to one of the popular picnic spot in Kuala Kubu that is Sungai Chill-ing (sejuk kot sungainya).

Kledang Challenge

Kledang Challenge 2007

The objective is just to complete this endurance compass race. The race starts at the foot hill of Gunung Kledang at Menglembu and finishes at Kg Bekor, Manong. We need to finish the race in 24 hours.

Pre Race

For starter, none of us knew how to use a compass to navigate. But organizer manages to give a crash course prior to the race. That night after lots of ucapan by the organizer and some briefing we were given a camping site to sleep. Anyway, we choose to sleep on the pavement at the stadium. I guess that is not a good idea, we don’t have much sleep that night and feel groggy in the morning. At 7.00am we were transported by lorry to the foothill and another set of ucapan from the politician ensue. I have decided that we will bring some essential item during the race, as we may have to sleep in the jungle that night. Some of the pro participant don’t even bring anything accept a backpack stored with water. I did not want to take that kind of risk as we are inexperience and at least we would have some equipment with us in case we are stranded.

The Race

The race started late almost at 9.00am. We were made to climb the Gunung Kledang using a road heading toward a telecommunication tower. I hate this kind of terrain and it is kind of boring. Along the way when I have a breather, I met an old man with his daughter having their routine climb. As he looks at me panting, he gave me these advice `jangan makan mcdonald dan minum coke, selalu training’ (chuckle). So the old man can do it, so can I. Nearing the top of the mountain, there’s a detour to the dense jungle, so the adventure begins.

I guess we are in the last group to reach the top. Our first turn is really a bad decision, we’re on a cliff and the terrain is very steep. At the end, I have decided to turn back and follow the path cleared by the other teams. The trail is confusing, the compass is confusing too, I started to doubt our ability to navigate through this. After a few hours we manage get out of the jungle to an old logging path. Tired and disoriented and at this point of time I fell down and hurt my ankle. Era tried to ease the pain by putting some deep heat cream on it but Ija swiftly took over (giggle).

After some rest, we move on to palm oil plantation estate. It is vast and we need to walk under the hot sun, correspondingly our temperature is going up and argument erupts. I have to apologize to others to cool things down. To make matter worse Era turns into her favorite mode, that is the zombie mode, Ija pants tore at her backside and needs a change, As is in no mood to joke and there is not a single person or animals sighted.

We walk and walk and walk until we reach the end of the palm oil plantation and finally entered a rubber plantation where we found lots of mosquitoes. It is heartening to experience the daily hardship that a rubber tapper needs to endure. To my relief, after an hour or so we reach a tarred road and met some orang asli on the way. They showed us the direction to the main road and our confidence restored. At last we finally bump into another team just in front of us. They are carrying heavy backpack and looks like a ninja turtle (chuckle). Ija started to taunt them `engkorang tak lari, kita potong’. To my surprise, they started to run. So we do too. After a short chase we manage to overtake them. At least we’re not last (laugh). Somewhere, at the end of the road we met Haji Johar (the organizer) and his assistance that took out a video cam to record our feat. We reached the finishing line after 10 hours of grueling trek. The team that we just beat is the warden from Jabatan Penjara. The woman in team is fuming mad as she is being duped to carry so much in their backpack as to justify the need to camp in the jungle. At the end of the day none of the teams needs to camp inside the jungle that night.

After the Race

Again we were given a site to camp at a school compound at Kg Bekor. After one sleepless night at the stadium and a grueling race, I have decided to call Yop to pick us up. He obliged and while waiting, I took the time to have dinner at the school canteen and what do you know, my favorite dishes the Gulai Tempoyak is being served. We have a good sleep that night at Yop house in Ipoh, the girls really appreciates it. In the morning, after a sumptuous breakfast of roti canai, Yop send us to the stadium to pick our car. Then, we’re headed back to Kg Bekor (singing) for the prize giving ceremony.

Conclude

What we have learned from this experience are: -
In a compass run, it is easier to follow the path of others instead of making your own.
Do not bring too much luggage (laugh).
Make sure your girl friends don’t touch you when you’re injured (grin).
Try not to get angry during a race.
Make sure that you’re fit or you will become a Zombie.
Do have a good night sleep prior to a race (we should rent a room!)
It’s good to have a relative like Yop!
Anyway, we certainly having fun and can’t wait to do this all over again (minus the argument of course).

Gunung Gap and Ulu Semangkok

Our Erra follows Orang Gunung Kuala Lumpur to the peak of Gunung Gap and Ulu Semangkok (5,473 feet). It tooks about 2 hours to reach the higher peak (Ulu Semangkok) and the journey to the top is consider easy as it is a day trip and you don't have to carry any equipment to the top (kebetulan pacat pun tak bekerja hari tu).

Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park is a park off the coast of the island of Borneo Malaysia made up of five islands namely Gaya, Manukan, Sapi, Sulug and Mamutik. The island are the most popular destination for snorkeling in Kota Kinabalu. Situated about 3 to 8 km from Kota Kinabalu and is reachable by boat in 20 minutes. Our trekkers has managed to visit three of the Island. What do they do over there, well plenty as you can see below.

Datuk Ahmad Jais (71) is a very popular singer in the 60's. Most of us are not born yet when he recorded his first album in 1965. It is facinating to see Ahmad Jais performing in a concert infront of mix audience of younger and older generation and still manage to captivate them with his golden voice. The hightlight of the show most probably is when he sing Sri Banang while being accompanied by two well known artiste namely Pak Ngah and S. Atan. Some of the golden generation shed tears while listening to the evergreen oldies like Gelisah and Di Ambang Sore. I can say this is indeed a wonderful, nostalgic cool experience.
